Lutheran Prayer Corner

A household guide for a simple prayer place centered on Scripture, catechesis, and Christ.

What Is a Prayer Corner?

A prayer corner, sometimes called a home altar, is a set-apart place for Scripture reading, catechism, hymnody, and daily prayer.

It can be as simple as a Bible, hymnal, Small Catechism, candle, and printed office on a shelf. Visual aids should direct attention toward Christ and the Word, not become objects of worship.

Setting Up Your Prayer Corner

Location

  • Choose a quiet place with enough light for reading.
  • Use an eastern wall if that tradition is helpful and practical.
  • Keep it accessible for daily use rather than overly elaborate.
  • Use a small shelf, table, or cabinet that can stay uncluttered.

Essential Elements

  • Bible
  • Hymnal
  • Small Catechism
  • Prayer book or printed office
  • Cross or crucifix
  • Candle or oil lamp used with care
  • Seasonal cloth or small marker

Recommended Sacred Art

If icons or sacred art are used, begin with Christ-centered images. A Christ Pantocrator icon, a crucifix, or other image of Christ should remain central.

Images of Mary as Theotokos and of saints may teach and remind the household of faithful witness, but they must not imply invocation or worship.

Using It Daily

Morning Prayer

  • Light a candle if appropriate.
  • Make the sign of the cross.
  • Pray Matins or Morning Prayer.
  • Read Scripture and the catechism.
  • Extinguish the candle when finished.

Evening Prayer

  • Pray Vespers, Evening Prayer, or Compline.
  • Give thanks for the day.
  • Confess sin and receive Christ's mercy by faith.
  • Pray for the Church, household, neighbors, and the dying.

Maintenance And Seasonal Changes

  • Keep the area clean and uncluttered.
  • Replace candles safely.
  • Use violet or blue in Advent, violet in Lent, white or gold at Christmas and Easter, red at Pentecost, and green through much of Trinity season.
  • Rotate printed cards, collects, or hymns according to the church year.
